Archive, Backup & Transfer

A deep dive into my archive system and strategies for secure backup and transfer
15

Dear friends,

In this letter, I want to dive deep into one of the biggest challenges we face daily as freelance photographers: Creating an archive and secure backups of an ever-growing catalog of work. To explain my personal and so-far proven concept in detail, I’ve created a roughly 25min video that you can watch above. I’m storing 133 468 images in my archive at this time, and this system makes it blazingly fast to browse old projects without any tagging or any further help from software or AI. And it takes a minimum of your time to set up.

I’m using Adobe Lightroom as my primary application for this specific workflow. Still, this concept can easily be transferred to other systems like Capture One, Bridge and Photoshop, or whatever your favorite tool might be.

I’m using the following hardware and cloud services for backup and transfer:

Angelbird 512GB CFexpress Card - My favorite brand of cards, reliable and fast

Angelbird CFexpress Reader - Fast reader, available for all kinds of cards

Samsung T7 SSD 2TB - My go-to portable SSD, rugged version available

SanDisk Professional 12TB G-RAID 2 - My Archive storage solution, soon to be replaced, but it worked well.

Dropbox - Client transfer and backup (affiliate link, get 500MB on top of your subscription using this link)

Backblaze - Bulk backup and cloud storage (affiliate link, get a month for free)

Let me know in the comments, via email, or in the chat if you have any questions or suggestions on improving this further. If you found this approach helpful, feel free to buy me a coffee. Your help is greatly appreciated; it keeps this newsletter up and running.
