Light Diary I: Ultrabounce Booklight

A brief look behind-the-scenes and a breakdown of a recent advertising shoot featuring continuous light sources.

Dear friends,

Today I’m launching a new series on this Substack called LIGHT DIARY, and this is a very special one for me. Since I started this project, my main intention has been to share as openly as possible: my approach to my photography, the process, the failures, and the progress. At the same time, this newsletter gives me space and reason to experiment further.

Light has always been a big part of my work, and it’s genuinely one of my biggest obsessions in photography. This is why I want to take you with me on this journey and take you behind the scenes on existing shoots, as well as discover new and old ways of lighting on a theoretical and practical level.

Today, we’re looking at one lighting setup we did as a team at the beginning of the year for a german federal institution. This was a special shoot, as we had to photograph 15 employees from this institution over the course of 4 days in 2 german cities. And one of the biggest challenges was that we had to build an individual lighting setup for each protagonist - one of which we are breaking down today in detail.

Let me know in the comments or via email if you have further questions or feedback.

See you next week,

Ramon

P.S. Thanks to the excellent team for making this possible, especially Jean-Paul for documenting the setup and being fabulous! Thanks: to Luca, Martin, Stephan, Sebastian, Patrick, Marie, Alex, Elena, Astrid, Sabine, Joerk, and all the clients and protagonists on set.
