Resisting the Algorithm: A Journey, Ep. 02 - Notes on Fighting Distraction and Finding Deep Resonance

This is the 2nd Edition of 'Resisting the Algorithm: A Journey'

A series of essays, thoughts, and practical explorations to help you (and me) break free from algorithmic pressure and trends, find true resonance with your work and audience, and distribute your work while maintaining your sanity.

German sociologist and philosopher Hartmut Rosa has been one of the most influential figures in my personal development and has significantly shaped my thinking throughout this series of essays and practical explorations, particularly through his theory of resonance.

According to Rosa's theory, modern society is characterized by constant acceleration and alienation, where people feel disconnected from the world, others, and themselves. He proposes "resonance" as the antidote - a form of responsive, transformative relationship with the world where we are both affected by and affect what we encounter, similar to how musical resonance works. He argues that a good life isn't measured by having more resources or options (which he calls "increasing our reach"), but by having more moments of meaningful resonance - whether with nature, art, people, or work.

Observing the superficiality of modern consumption has led me to consider ways to more deeply engage with our work and connect with others through our creative process.

However, to approach true resonance, we as creatives must first declutter our minds and combat distraction and addiction to the best of our ability.

I sincerely hope this issue resonates with you!
